Why are there sparkles on some of the holes?

Some of the pits/holes in the ground have sparkles. I've tried jumping down them and nothing happens. Anyone know what they are for? Do I need to find an item to use on them or something?

Buy the fishing rod relic and use them when a hole in the ground is sparkling. You will get something worth gold or a fish that can fill up your chalice with one of the ichors at random(it might be level specific actually, I don't know - I'll update this if I find out). There may be other things that you can get too, but that's all I've gotten so far. You can only fish in each sparkling hole once per a play-through of a level.
