Reasons why Diablo 2 is like Path of Exile

Having played both of these games for hundreds of hours, I can say that Path of Exile was heavily inspired by Diablo 2 and I think it is it's true successor. The reason that people can play these games well past the traditional "I beat the game" point is that there are so many different ways to customize your characters. It's extremely addicting to think of new character ideas and then spend a day or two leveling the characters up and seeing if your ideas worked out. This is a huge part of Path of Exile, even more so than Diablo 2. There are countless variations of skills, passive tree nodes and gear choices in Path of Exile. The passive tree is enormous and can be somewhat overwhelming when you first see it.

The other addicting aspect of ARPGs like Path of Exile and Diablo 2 is the rare items that you could obtain if you're lucky. Even though I've played Path of Exile for way more than I'd like to admit, I have never found any of the super rare items in the game(6 link, Shavronne's Wrappings, etc).

In Diablo 2, I had a ton of fun PvPing, but it doesn't seem to be as popular in Path of Exile. I think MOBAs have taken the allure of PVPing from ARPGs.
