How do you put an item away?

I keep picking up flares and accidentally using them. Is there any way to put an item away after you select it from the radial menu? It's pretty annoying...

I don't think you can. There are a few items that aren't annoying: Medkits, stungun, revolver, shotgun, flamethrower. I may be missing a few, but those are usually what I switch to when I don't want to walk around with a huge thing in my hand.
